Environmental Justice programming at Vance High School started in October 2012 and has grown from just an after-school club to programming and experiential learning throughout the school day:
-Environmental Justice Club (EJC) - meets Thursdays after-school in F109
-Experiential Learning - students in the EJC will be eligible to attend field trips (examples of trips include; Uptown's Mint Museum, UNCC, Catawba College's Center for the Environment, Mecklenburg Recycling Center, etc.)
-Partnership with Principles of Leadership class - students enrolled in this course participate in environmental justice programs during every class meeting with the goal of Environmental Justice eventually becoming its own elective course
Environmental Justice programming is also taking place at James Martin Middle School through a mentoring program with Vance High School's Leadership class. Once a week, 11 of Vance HS Leaders travel to James Martin's Leadership and art classes to mentor their 8th graders on environmental justice projects.
-Made by Milk Recycled Art Contest - James Martin art and leadership students have been working hard on an art submission made entirely from milk cartons collected in their school
-The Shoe Box Project - Vance and Martin leaders have worked to collect and decorate shoe boxes to fill with winter survival items for the homeless (ex: gloves, hats, toiletries, snacks, etc.)
